Top Attractions in Cologne

Top Attractions in Cologne
By Gagan Makin

The Cologne Gothic Cathedral which has been given the status of UNESCO world heritage site took over 600 years to build and is a chief attraction for tourists to this city. Tourists can view the treasures placed in the historic vaulted chamber. Most tourists prefer to get a good view of Cologne by climbing the 509 steps to the observation platform. While in Cologne Germany, you can also visit the house of 4711, the Original Eau-de-Cologne. Another chief Cologne tourist attraction is Glockengasse, located in the city centre, just opposite the opera house.

Tourists are generally happy to have a drink of beer at a pub in the Altstadt (old town). The local beer called Kolcsh is a pale fermented beer that has been brewed in the Cologne Metropolitan area. An attraction worth a look is the Roman-German Museum. Here you can see some Roman antiquities belonging to the first through to the fourth century. Most visitors to the museum are quite fascinated by the 230 foot long mosaic showing Dionysus, the Roman God of wine.

The Cologne Carnival is famous world wide for its colorful, joyous celebration and attracts nearly one million visitors. Known as The Three Mad Days it marks the end and climax of Cologne Carnival. Merrymaking begins on the streets at Alter Markt on the preceding Thursday before the beginning of Lent. Huge processions pass through the streets the next Sunday, watched by thousands of people. The main highlight is on Monday known as the Rose Monday (Rosenmontag). This is the day of the big Carnival procession with the three chief Carnival figures Prince, Peasant and Maiden.

Tropical Polynesian Hawaiian Party Ideas Recipes Decor

Tropical Polynesian Hawaiian Party Ideas, Recipes, Decor
By Gail Leino

A Hawaiian party will make use of anything and everything Hawaiian these days. And considering the melding of polynesian, asian and american cultures with the native Hawaiian culture that can be a lot of unusual things.

Food is the grand affair at any party. An in Hawaii there is a lot of good and unusual food. If you are looking for something a little different than just the pineapple and roast pork dish you can try Spam Misubi.

This is a slice of Spam, yes spam, it is very popular in Hawaii, with a block of rice placed on top and held together with a strip of seaweed. This can make an excellent appetizer for guests and is relatively cheap.

As for party favors for the hawaiian party it is typical to give out leis to guests as they arrive. Leis are strings of flowers that can be made into a headdress or necklace. They traditionally represent affection for guests and can be given for just about any occasion in Hawaii. Another party favor for guests to take home is the tiki. The tiki is usually a small carved figure of a man. Symbollically it represents the first man from many polynesian myths and legends.

To add to the flavor of Hawaii you can invite guests to come to the party wearing Hawaiian shirts. These original flowered button ups came into being during WWII and were very popular among the service men. They have been a symbol of Hawaii and the tropics ever since.

The dcor should be tropical. Try dragging in some potted palms and big green leafy frond plants to create a jungle atmosphere. If your party is outdoors you can light some torches, if they happen to be citronella all the better for keeping mosquitos away. An indoor party can make use of decorative lights that can be bought in many local stores.

Maui Condo Rental Vacations

Maui Condo Rental Vacations
By Alison Cole

Condos have become the most popular accommodation option in Maui. Holidaymakers now prefer the option of living in a comfortable apartment instead of a pricey hotel suite. You will find that you have a number of condos to choose from. The best way to go about finding a condo is to first choose which part of the island you want to live in and then comb through condo listings. Condos get filled up very quickly especially in the high season so make sure you book well in advance.

Condos vary in size and you can choose between a studio apartment, a one bedroom or a two bedroom apartment. The sea-facing condos are very popular. The condos come fully furnished, equipped with all the modern conveniences like dishwashers, washing machines and dryers, you are used to. The condo rent depends on the size of the condo and its location. Normally a studio apartment costs around $180 per night during the high season and could go down to $150 during the low season. Double bedroom condos cost up to $300 during the high season. An 11.42% tax is charged for every night you stay.

While making an advance booking, you will be expected to pay a 50% deposit. Without paying this, your accommodation will not be reserved for you. Once the payment is made, a confirmation slip will be sent to you. Save this carefully as this is the only proof of payment you have. Cancellation charges are high and you may lose heavily (sometimes you will even have to pay the entire rent) if you cancel at the last minute.

Maine Travel

Maine Travel
By Kent Pinkerton

Maine is wild and beautiful. From rugged woods to skiing and ice fishing; mountains and lakes to national parks, there is much to see here.

The natural wonders and recreation activities of Maine are spread over a very large area, and it would be impossible to see it all over one visit, so it is advisable to have a planned itinerary .The western Maine mountains spread up from Bethel to the highest peak of Mount Katahdin and are home to fast, furious rivers, lush hills, and plenty of outdoor activities such as water sports, hiking, etc. The rocky coastal area boasts of art and poetry. The southern coast is full of beautiful beaches, and further down east is the famous Acadia national park. The northern part of Maine has plenty of uninhabited areas with lots of woods and lush green nature.

The seasons in the New England area are long and well defined, with long rainy periods. There is no best time to visit Maine, though the busiest tourist season in some areas tends to be summer. One should expect to pay premium rates at hotels and restaurants. Fall in Maineas in the other three New England statesis one of the finest spectacles in all of the United States, with the hills full of red and orange foliage. It is a very popular time to travel, with bus tours flocking like wild birds. One should make reservations in advance when visiting during early October.

Winter brings about tourism in the ski resorts, especially during the school vacation days. This is when the rates of hotels on and around the slopes are the highest. The state of Maine is happy to answer queries and send information to travelers who call or write ahead of their travel dates.

SixStar Cruising on Luxury Cruise Lines

Six-Star Cruising on Luxury Cruise Lines
By Colin Hartness

A luxury cruise is just what the name implies, a cruise at the upper end of the spectrum, not just five stars but a six-star cruise. There are six cruise lines that are in the luxury class: Crystal Cruise Line, Cunard Cruise Line, Radisson Seven Seas, The Yachts of Seabourn, Silversea Cruise Line, and Windstar Cruises.

Crystal Cruise Line has received numerous awards for excellence. For the last nine years, Conde Nast Traveler has named Crystal Best Large-Ship Cruise Line. Also for the last nine years, Travel + Leisure magazine has given Crystal the status of Worlds Best Large-Ship Cruise Line. And for service, a Travel + Leisure readers poll voted Crystal Worlds Best. Crystal Cruise Line operates only three ships: Crystal Harmony, Crystal Symphony and Crystal Serenity. These ships carry approximately 1,000 passengers each and Crystal Cruise Line boasts the greatest passenger space per guest of any cruise line.

Do you recognize the ship names Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth? These great ships come from Cunard, a name long synonymous with luxury and elegance in cruises. With Cunard, the journey may be even more magnificent than the destination states their promotional literature. Cunard operates just two award-winning luxury ships. The Queen Mary 2, launched in January, 2004, is known as the longest, tallest and largest ocean liner and carries 2,620 passengers. It is replacing the Queen Elizabeth 2 for transatlantic crossings but the QE2 will still be available for cruises.

Radisson Seven Seas is a small luxury cruise line. Small here means that the ships carry a small number of passengers. Fewer than 700 fortunate passengers per cruise are pampered by attentive staff. Radisson Seven Seas has been named by Conde Nast Traveler and Travel + Leisure magazines to be the Worlds Best Small Cruise Line. Radisson Seven Seas appeals to the sophisticated traveler.

The Yachts of Seabourn cruise line advertises that they provide Ultra Luxury by delivering the highest levels of personalized service to an exclusive group of guests aboard intimate, elegant ships that could visit the most enticing destinations worldwide. Seabourn sails three identical all-suite ships that cater to only 208 passengers each. Of course, dining and service is world-class.

Silversea Cruises is a new company, founded in 1994, for the express purpose of providing an ultra-luxury cruise experience aboard small and intimate ships with all the features of a large cruise vessel. The Silverseas ships Cloud, Wind, Shadow, and Whisper provide all-suite accommodations that between 250 square feet and over 1,300 square feet in size. Silversea vies with Radisson Seven Seas and Crystal Cruise Lines for the accolades of Conde Nast Traveler and Travel + Leisure in the worlds best categories. Silversea Cruises has also has been named by Conde Nast Traveler and Travel + Leisure magazines to be the Worlds Best Small Cruise Line many times since its inception.

Windstar Cruises offers a totally different sailing experience. Windstar Cruises offers motor-sail-yachts instead of cruise ships. Yes, their ships actually have sails that are computer-controlled with the latest in technology. Windstars four ships carry just 148 to 308 passengers in staterooms or luxurious suites, giving the feel of being aboard a personal yacht. Even with such a small fleet, Windstar Cruises sail to over 47 countries around the world.

If youre in the market for a luxury cruise, there are a number of excellent cruise lines to chose from.

Texas Hiking Vacation

Texas Hiking Vacation
By Alison Cole

One of the longest trails for a hiking vacation in Texas is in the Hillcountry area. The Goodwater Trail snakes around Lake Georgetown and just about totally encircles it. With numerous trailheads to select from, this hike offers abundant opportunities for a hiking vacation. The most familiar starting point for a hike along Lake Georgetown is at Cedar Breaks Park, which is at the southeastern corner of the lake. The trail starts off on a well-maintained plane of crushed stone. However, within a quarter of a mile, it turns rocky and rough along the lakeshore. Some of the most excellent views of the lake are near mile marker one on the trail and thereafter. The trail cuts through rough terrain, occasionally passing through gaps and enormous limestone boulders over six feet high. Thick clusters of cactus and Cedar also dot the area, at times partly overhanging the trail itself.

Another hiking vacation spot is one of Williamson County's newest parks, Berry Springs Park and Preserve. In a short period of time, this park has added over two miles of trails appropriate for families and beginners. The hike starts at the parking lot near waypoint Trailhead. From this spot, a paved path leads to the east and west and both end in a small loop, turning back to the trailhead. However, at each of these turnaround points, unpaved trails continue. The trail system makes a loop around much of the park's land, along with side trails bisecting it at different points along the way.

In most cases, the north shore's trails are easier, and this is mainly true of the trails on the northwest sector of the lake. They consist of wide jeep trails and dirt roads on terrain that gently undulates for several miles before it becomes a bit rougher. There are alternate trailheads at the end of West Lake Parkway at Tejas Camp and at Russell Park.

Arrival in Cuernavaca and Getting to Know My B&B Hostess Marta Elena A True Riches to Rags Story

Arrival in Cuernavaca and Getting to Know My B&B Hostess Marta Elena - A True Riches to Rags Story
By Susanne Pacher

After my arrival in Cuernavaca and the lovely dinner at Vanessa's aunt's place the whole family took me to my temporary home for the next couple of days: Villa San Marcos is a bed and breakfast located in a historic mansion in an area just south of downtown Cuernavaca. The B&B has five beautifully decorated guest bedrooms, all with private bath, and a wonderful totally private garden with tropical plants, flowers and fruit trees. Free Internet access is available as well. The owner, Marta Elena de las Fuentes, greeted me warmly and right away I was invited to join in a small private birthday celebration. After a little while I didn't even feel like a guest, I felt just like a family friend as I was included in the conversation and the festivities. (Marta Elena, an avid and very talented cook, had made this totally amazing mango birthday cake, it was absolutely delicious and would just melt in your mouth). What a great start to my stay in Cuernavaca! During my travels I often run into interesting people, and Marta Elena, as I found out tonight, is one of those. She grew up in a very wealthy family in Torren in northern Mexico and listening to Marta Elenas childhood stories brings to mind images of the glamorous 1950s and 1960s, a time of jet-setting and entertainment among the very wealthy. Even the story surrounding her infancy is very unusual: Marta Elena was adopted and her biological father was actually the nephew of her adoptive father. In her own words, she was one of the luckiest children as her father loved her so much to adopt her. At 7 years of age she finally found out about her adoption through a young friend. Everyone around her knew about it but her. Her mother denied that this adoption story was true, but her father admitted it and explained to her that she was wanted so much that she became part of his family. To illustrate her privileged upbringing, Marta Elena recounts an interesting story set against the backdrop of the Cuban Missile crisis: while she was studying at an upscale boarding school in Paris as a teenager, all the foreign students received phone calls from their parents to return home due to the political insecurity. Marta Elena didn't and decided that the world was going to end, so she figured she might as well go shopping. She had about $10,000 in a bank account and by the time she had finished her shopping spree, which included Christian Dior lingerie, designer shoes and pearls, there were only $500 left. Finally she got the much desired phone call from her parents and told them she was so sad since she was the only girl that didn't receive a concerned phone call from her parents. Her father explained that phone lines had been down and reassured her that politics would improve and asked her what she wanted to do now.

So Marta Elena said she wanted to go to Rome to study Italian. Would he let her? He said yes and sent her to the Opus Dei Residence in Rome. He told her to call him so he would wire her some money upon her arrival in Rome. Of the $500 she had left she had to buy a $250 trunk to carry all the new merchandise she had bought, as a result she only had enough money for a 2nd class train ticket. So she ended up sitting on her trunk for the whole trip from Paris to Rome in a 2nd class train. The irony of her youthful priorities isn't lost on her and she now laughs about this incident. Marta Elena loved Rome and had contact with many young people in Rome, mainly from upper-class families. She met many of her friends at a party at the Brazilian embassy. One of her friends had a boutique and this friend asked her to wear her clothes and translate for potential clients in the languages she knew: Spanish, Italian, French and English. The clothes were her reward for her effort. Marta Elenas father was a highly respected doctor and ran a medical clinic in Torren. She says she had a very sheltered and privileged childhood and grew up in a household of 3 people who had 7 servants. She went to high school in Monterrey at a nun's school. Then as a teenager she was sent to a nun's school in Burbank, California, and completed that school in 2 years. To this day she speaks English amazingly well with barely an accent. Her father gave her many opportunities, among others he sent her to European boarding schools. At 16 years of age she went to Paris to study at a very well-known boarding school called 'l'Assomption. Together with her friends, other girls from well-to-do Mexican families, they would go on different excursions around Paris on weekends and they would also explore neighbouring countries. Of her time in Paris Marta Elena says that she learned a lot, in particular from some of the older teachers, who had come from wealthy families, but had lost it all during the 2nd World War. They taught her that all the wealth you might have doesn't make you. They said It's the culture and your outlook on life who make you what you are. This message has stayed with her her entire life. Her time in Italy made her very self-assured, she became an independent young woman and was able to do and discover many things that had not been possible for her in her sheltered life in Mexico. When she returned from Europe at 19 she felt restricted and suffocated. In Mexico City she went on a blind date, and fell in love with the young man. The two young lovers were married shortly before her 21st birthday. Marta Elena has 3 children from this marriage: her oldest - a daughter, and two sons, all of whom she is very proud of. She says she wanted to be the best mother she could be.

Once the family came, the international travelling stopped, but the family did visit her father's ranch near Torren every summer. When her youngest son started going to school, she started volunteering in a hospital - the so-called ABC Hospital, the American British Cowdry, or as the Mexican's called it: El Hospital Ingls. Every Thursday she volunteered for 9 years between 9 am and 1:30 pm in different functions, including helping out with administrative duties in the operating room. She also took up gardening and cooking and took many classes in both fields and has become a real expert in these endeavours. After her divorce, Marta Elena moved back to her home town Torren as Mexico City had become very dangerous. Her daughter was married in Torren and her older son was going to university there. After her divorce, her daughter moved to Cuernavaca, and requested her mother to move close to her. To be closer to her daughter, Marta Elena gave in and moved to Cuernavaca 2.5 years ago. She purchased the B&B from a previous owner who was an American expatriate. Without any trace of self pity Marta Elena refers to her life as a from riches to rags story. After her fathers death in the mid 1970s her mother managed the finances and many of the familys assets were sold off right around the time of the devaluation of the Mexican peso, leaving the family with barely a fraction of their worth. As a result, Marta Elena, who had never worked in her life, started to go to work at age 60 and has been running her bed and breakfast for about two and a half years now. She is one of the few people in Cuernavaca who run a bed and breakfast without the daily support of a maid or a gardener. As a matter of fact, Marta Elena runs her bed and breakfast with 5 bedrooms and a large tropical garden all by herself, without any regular help from anyone.

The amazing thing that struck me so completely is that Marta Elena, who had been so used to a privileged lifestyle lived only by the upper classes, who had never held a paid job during the first 60 years of her life, has adapted so well to her new role as the owner of this beautiful bed and breakfast, working hard every day from early morning to late at night. Her smile just radiates optimism and she is one of those precious bed and breakfast owners who truly enjoys the company of her guests. Marta Elena managed to turn something that might have derailed another human being into a new challenge and an opportunity. Now she works hard every day, yet she has adapted so well to her new role, it shows in everything that she does. Marta Elena is definitely a unique and interesting individual who knows how to make her guests feel at home and I am looking forward to hearing more of her interesting stories.

The Da Vinci Code Good Or Bad? An Opinion From The Travel Industry

The Da Vinci Code, Good Or Bad? An Opinion From The Travel Industry
By R. Johnson

We are just days from the official release of the film the Da Vinci Code, yet even before it has hit cinemas in Europe the upcoming release has caused concern in Christian circles. Dan Browns novel, which has sold more than 40 million copies worldwide, tells a story of attempts by the Church to suppress the truth of Christs marriage to Mary Magdalene and his fathering of a royal bloodline.

The Archbishop of Canterbury, The Rt Revd Rowan Williams, criticized it in his Easter address: Think of the massive international industry around The Da Vinci Code: it is exciting to think of conspiracies and cover-ups when trust in traditional institutions is low. But here is the problem. We are familiar with the world of cover-up stories; we are on safer ground with their cynicism and worldly wisdom. They are less challenging and dont involve us in confronting difficult realities. And like any kind of cynicism they stop us hearing anything new or surprising.

Last year Westminster Abbey refused to allow the 40 million Hollywood adaptation of the book, starring Tom Hanks and Sir Ian McKellen, to be filmed there. Instead, the diocese of Winchester opened its doors to the producers. So is the films subject matter unsuitable, as Westminster Abbey believes, or it an opportunity for the Christian faith, as the diocese of Winchester believes?

From the travel and tourism industrys point of view, it is an opportunity to bring increased tourism and travel to the UK. From that point of view it may have been a blessing that Westminster declined, as it is already able to draw large crowds. More tourists can now be expected to travel to Winchester. Large numbers of tourists, especially from the United States, are expected to go on spiritual tours to Europe that will include visits to sites used in the film.

Indeed, the English National tourism agency VisitBritain, the Scottish tourist board VisitScotland and the French tourist office, Maison de la France, have partnered with Sony Pictures and its global partner, Eurostar - the high-speed rail service.

They have even created a dedicated new website, www.visitdavincicode.com, featuring in-depth visitor information about Paris, London, and Edinburgh, behind-the-scenes secrets from different locations, key destinations and related attractions and a downloadable The Da Vinci Code movie map. Unfortunately, vacation rentals are not included in the resources that the site provides links to.

The site also offers holiday packages offering consumers the chance to seek the truth and follow in the footsteps of the films characters. But how sincere is this and what should Christians think about it? This authors point of view is practical: sometimes bad publicity is better than no publicity. Millions of people will see the film and many of them will come to Europe to visit locations used in the film. They will enter genuine holy sites and while there perhaps they will put aside the films mixed message and have time to consider the beauty of the sites and think about God.

Whatever your opinion may be, some Roman Catholics have taken a humourous approach and created a fun site for people going on a Da Vinci Code tour. Check out Freebies for The Da Vinci Code Enthusiasts.

We would certainly recommend spending time near each of the sites. There are lots of bed and breakfasts and holiday cottages for rent around Lincoln Cathedral. For Rosslyn Chapel, just south of Edinburgh in Scotland, there are also many cute holiday cottages to rent. Even the north-west of Paris where Chateau de Villette is, there are French holiday villas.

Zambezi Sharks Under Threat at Protea Banks

Zambezi Sharks Under Threat at Protea Banks
By Melt Du Plooy

Sharklife.co.za has been fighting an ongoing for the protection of the Zambezi shark on Protea Banks but has been informed that a fishing charter is still trophy fishing for these sharks.

Sensational Fishing Charters is the only charter in the area to actively advertise and promote shark trophy fishing.

It takes Zambezi sharks over 20 years to reach breeding maturity. Should this slaughter be allowed to continue we fear that the entire Zambezi shark population of Protea Banks will soon be gone. Currently the only sharks seen on Protea Banks that have any form of protection, are the Great White and Spotted Ragged-tooth. Many other species, like the Zambezi, are in desperate need of protection and we need your help to get the authorities to act and get unscrupulous charters to stop their slaughter.

Local dive charter African Odyssea has witnessed the drastic decline in the Zambezi shark population on Protea Banks. One could expect to see up to 20 or more individual sharks on a single dive when diving began there in 1994 and this season 2005 there are an estimated 7 individual Zambezi's left on the reef.

Each of these 7 sharks is a national treasure attracting thousands of divers each year to Protea Banks not to mention their vital importance to the ecology of the reef.

To voice your protest or support, e-mail Sensational at fishmad@iafrica.com. Please cc SHARKLIFE at grant@sharklife.co.za. Visit the sharklife website here

10 Lanzarote Beaches General

10 Lanzarote Beaches - General
By John Plumb

Lanzarote offers a wide variety of beaches including white and black sand, placid and ruffled waters and these are, as you would expect distributed along the entire coast of the island.

Further articles posted by me discuss in more detail the best beaches in each of the seven municipalities (articles 11 to 17) and these form part of a much wider portfolio of information I'm providing to help holiday makers.

So, where is the best beach then?

As my home-from-home is in the south of the island in Playa Blanca in the municipality of Yaiza, I am somewhat biased as to where the best beach is and for me it is without doubt, Papagayo. Judging by the research Ive done on the Internet, I am not alone in this opinion, so no matter where you are staying, I would suggest that you should not miss this one out.

Punta de Papagayo (to give it its full name), is located at the southernmost tip of Lanzarote. With a surrounding landscape of volcanic ash, crystal clear water and fine white sand, this stretch of the coast , with several small bays and coves is quite simply stunning. Access is gained by first driving across a dirt track road (quite bumpy), then paying a toll (its that good, they charge you a small entrance fee), and then walking down the sand banks to the beach as there is no man-made path.

BEFORE you walk down the banks, remember to get anything you need from the one and only cafeteria in this area, as you wont want to keep trudging up and down, trust me, Ive done it. The difficulty in getting to the beach is worth it. If you decide to walk along the beach to look at other bays, please bear in mind the fact that some visitors bathe nude at this location as it is permitted. You should not encounter this in the bay by the cafeteria.

If you research this beach on the Internet more widely, you will read statements like wild at times and waves can be a little strong at times, so your instinct will, quite rightly tell you to keep an eye on the children.

I want to devote the rest of this introductory article to a day on Papagayo in the Spring of 2005.

On this particular trip, my wife decided to stay at the top of the cliff by the cafeteria, as we were not planning to stay long. I took my two sons down to the immediate bay as the children were pestering me to let them play in the sand and have a dip in the water (as children do). I did what most parents do on holiday - I gave in to their demands for a peaceful life.

My eldest son (who was 11 at the time) decided hed like to be a little braver than the younger one, who was 6 years old and who stayed in the ankles only region of the sea with me. He wandered out to a point that each wave broke about the chest to neck area and if he jumped up as the wave broke to avoid getting a mouthful of salt water.

All children do this and Im sure by now, you know whats coming. well he didnt!

I could see a rather large wave behind him out at sea and began to shout towards him to come back in a bit. He never understood my gesticulations towards him, so I moved towards him (instructing the younger one to go back up the beach immediately and stay put). For once, the younger one did as he was told and as I got closer he heard me and moved towards me. I got to within 5 metres of him before the wave crashed 15 feet above his head!

For what seemed an eternity at the time, I completely lost sight of him. He resurfaced, spluttering, and a good 30 metres away from me, which should give you an appreciation of the waves power. My son waited to see my reaction before bursting out laughing (I think he thought I would be angry with him, as if!). He was covered from head to foot in sand, had drank a pint or more of salt water and despite his brave face, he was clearly shook up and to this day we still recall that wave at Papagayo, but he had learnt his lesson and he lives to swallow salt water another day.

It is worth pointing out that both of my children are very good swimmers, having attended swimming lessons from an early age. Their reward for this, is to be given more freedom when on holiday, particularly in the swimming pools, providing we can still see them. I did not for one moment (you know I really mean that I did) think that he would not come back up, but please take my experience into account if you go to Papagayo as the warning strong waves at times is often dismissed by the occasional visitor.

But dont let this put you off, as this is truly a fantastic location and we still go back on most visits to the island.

I will to bring this article to a close with an important Safety Message - Swimming & playing in the sea is great fun, but be aware of the dangers and act responsibly and look out for Flag warnings. To this end, you should:

1. Swim parallel to the shore;
2. Swim within your depth (it can often be difficult to swim back to the Beach as currents can be strong);
3. Never swim immediately after eating;
4. Never swim alone or at night;
5. Be aware of local conditions (currents etc), seek advice if in doubt and beware of boats and jet skis if they are in the vicinity and please do not swim in areas allocated for their use;
6. Remember that a Red Flag means Dangerous Conditions, do not enter the water;
7. Remember that a Yellow Flag means Dangerous Conditions, exercise caution; and
8. Remember that a Green Flag means its Safe for swimming.

Oh and in case youre wondering, it was a Green Flag at the time of the incident with my son and it was altered to Yellow by the time we got back to the top of the cliff.

Were we unlucky? No we were lucky!

Visiting Denver? Check Out These Great Restaurants

Visiting Denver? Check Out These Great Restaurants
By Douglas Hanna

If you're coming to Denver and not familiar with the downtown area, here's information on five great restaurants you might want to check out.

Elway's
So our Number 7 was a pretty good football player when he was with the Broncos, but surprise! He's also a pretty good restaurateur. The steaks at Elway's are first rate, the side dishes are excellent and the martinis like totally cold.

Elway's
2500 E. 1st Ave. (Cherry Creek Shopping Center)
303-399-5353

Table Six
Table Six just might be the hottest restaurant in Denver as of this writing. It's a relatively small neighborhood restaurant that's just a few minutes from the 16th St. Mall at 609 Corona. Its menu focuses on fresh, seasonal ingredients prepared in unusual ways. For example, you can get seafood sausage on white cabbage and broiled chicken, rabbit and Colorado lamb.

Table Six
609 Corona St.
303-831-8800

Aix
If you're in the mood for contemporary French cuisine, give Aix a try. It's menu mixes the tried and true with the newer, novelle dishes such as pomegranate risotto and mushroom-stuffed quail with cardamom lentils and orange gastrique. Aix also serves a variety of to-die-for game dishes.

Aix
719 E. 17th Ave.
303-831-1296

Restaurant Kevin Taylor
This is definitely one of Denver's most upscale and luxurious restaurants with a bumptious menu that ranges from bay scallop and squid ink ravioli to desert list that includes Hawaiian pineapple Charlotte. The wine list is 900 wines long.

Restaurant Kevin Taylor
1106 24th St.
303-820-2600

Vesta Dipping Grill
This very contemporary restaurant sports curvy walls and a curvy bar and sports a menu that serves up a few curves. It's basically a fondue restaurant where you order an entree and then choose three or more sauces from a long list of possibilities for your dipping pleasure. Featured entrees include ginger-seared Ahi tuna, pork tenderloin cubano, achiote-grilled Altantic salmon, madras coconut milk grilled venison and green chile masa gnocchi. If the idea of a customized meal fits you fancy, the Vesta Dipping Grill is your kind of place.

'Simulcast' Enjoyments: Why The Bradley Teletheater Is A MustSee For Anyone Visiting Windsor Locks

'Simulcast' Enjoyments: Why The Bradley Teletheater Is A Must-See For Anyone Visiting Windsor Locks
By Andrew Regan

A trip to Windsor Locks, Connecticut simply wouldn't be complete without a stop at one of its most exciting attractions, the 'simulcast' Bradley Teletheater. A first class facility where tourists and locals can watch and bet on jai-alai, as well as thoroughbred, harness and greyhound racing, The Bradley Teletheater is sure to offer a thrilling experience for fervent racing fans as well as first-time spectators. The off-track theatre, which holds 1,200 seats in grandstand arrangement, features a state-of-the-art race book and top-notch restaurants such as the Winner's Circle Lounge and the Turf Club. And, of course, the venue features 'simulcast' viewing and betting, which means that wagering is allowed at multiple sites.

The Bradley Teletheater is just across the street from the local airport in Windsor Locks; as a result, the venue makes for a particularly popular business meeting point. In fact, Bradley Teletheater hosts a number of social events - from parties to conferences; events include free parking, admission and programs, and the venue even offers a range of catering packages to accommodate any group.

While in Windsor Locks, visitors can take advantage of a number of other intriguing attractions, such as the Connecticut Convention Center in nearby Hartford; science buffs may be interested to know that the state-of-the-art convention center - which happens to be the largest venue of its kind between Boston and New York - also holds the Connecticut Center for Science and Exploration. The Noden-Reed Park Museum, a 22-acre historical park, is another area of interest in Windsor Locks, as is the New England Air Museum, the largest aviation museum in northeast United States.

As Windsor Locks is located halfway between Hartford, Connecticut and Springfield Massachusetts,an excursion to these two cities is not hard to undertake. Visit Connecticut's capital, which is also known as 'the insurance capital of the world,' then take a drive over to Springfield, which, interestingly enough, stands as the very first 'Springfield' among 34 in the United States; it is also home to the renowned Basketball Hall of Fame.

If you're planning a trip to Windsor Locks, you'll find that there are a number of fantastic hotel accommodation options to consider; Hilton Doubletree Hotel, for example, is right next to the airport - not to mention conveniently close to the Bradley Teletheater. So whether you're travelling on business or for leisure, you'll always have time to visit the teletheater; after all, a visit to Windsor Locks simply wouldn't be complete without it.

Andrew Regan is an online journalist who enjoys socialising at his local Edinburgh cricket club.

Did Colorado Kill Doc Holliday?

Did Colorado Kill Doc Holliday?
By David Urmann

John Henry Doc Hollidays final words, spoken as he lay dying in the Hotel Glenwood in Glenwood Springs, Colorado, were this is funny. Well never know, of course, exactly what the Wild West legend meant by this. Perhaps he found it ironic that after a life spent tempting death in the gambling dens of the American frontier, it was at last his 15-year long battle with tuberculosis that had killed him. But while it is certainly true that TB was the ultimate cause of his death, it may have had an accomplicethe state of Colorado itself.

Doc was born in Georgia in 1851. His mother died of tuberculosis when he was only 15, and it is likely that he contracted the disease from her. It lay dormant long enough for him to complete his classical education and graduate from Dentistry school before symptoms began to appear. After his diagnosis he was told he had a few months, perhaps a year, to live. He was 20 years old.

Climate was the only treatment anyone could recommend for tuberculosis in the middle of the 19th century. Seeking drier, hotter weather, Doc went west. Dying or not, he still had to make a living. Good dental hygiene, however, was not a priority for most cowboys, so Doc decided to try his hand at gambling.

Some historians have suggested that Doc deliberately put himself in harms way over the course of his life out of a desire to die a quick, if bloody, death rather than waste away as the result of his disease. Whether or not this is true, he certainly seemed to have the Devils luck (good or bad) protecting him. Though he was sickly, scrawny, famously quarrelsome and habitually in a state if of mortal danger, he always managed to survive.

Holliday has passed into legend as one of Americas most fearsome, steely-eyed gunslingers. But though he is credited with the killing of many men, these stories have no historical evidence. In truth, the one and only documented case of Doc killing anybody was at the infamous Gunfight at the OK Corral, when he shot Tom McLaury with a double-barrel shotgun at close rangehardly a feat the required a sharpshooter. Of his numerous escapades with a pistol he displayed abysmal aim, probably as a result of the constant flow of whiskey he consumed to control his cough. He is said to have stabbed several men to death, but this seems unlikely given his frail health and wasted physique; he supposedly carried only about 120 pounds on his 510 frame when he died.

More than a decade of gambling, smoking, drinking and fighting with some of the most dangerous men in America didnt kill Doc Holliday, but it didnt slow the progression of his disease, either. As he deteriorated he once again sought out better climate. In Victorian times (and for a long time after) consumptives were encouraged to seek high altitudes. This led Doc to the state of Colorado, the place that eventually killed him.

High altitude sickness is caused when the thinner air, where there is less oxygen in the atmosphere, causes the amount of oxygen in the bloodstream to decrease, causing headaches, nausea and a host of other symptoms. For someone like Holliday, who suffered from a severe and advanced lung disease that already interfered with his ability to breath, Colorados high altitude was torturous. With his health worsening daily he decided to seek treatment in Glenwood Springs, Colorado, a town famous for the healing waters of its natural hot-springs and vaporous caves.

Visiting the hot-springs was the worst possible course of action for the tubercular Holliday. Sulfur emissions from the mineral springs and geothermal steam baths at Glenwood Springs stripped the few shreds of healthy tissue from his already ravaged lungs. After a bitter lifetime of gambling with death at the point of a blade or the barrel of a pistol, his diseased body got the better of him. After 2 racking, bedridden months in the winter of 1887 Doc Hollidays lungs gave out and he died. Tuberculosis had been the loaded gun at his temple for almost half his life, but Colorado had finally pulled the trigger.

Liberia Costa Rica: Gateway to the North Pacific Coast and NorthWest National Parks of Costa Rica

Liberia Costa Rica: Gateway to the North Pacific Coast and North-West National Parks of Costa Rica
By Julia Thurston

Liberia International Airport is growing in popularity as an entry point to Costa Rica, providing a more amenable alternative for the north western region than San Jose is able to offer. The airport is as yet (although redevelopment is on the cards by 2007), reminiscent of a somewhat provincial domestic airport where you must make your own way across the scorching tarmac to the small airport building. Yet dont let this put you off! The benefits include a rapid exit and less time through customs, an instant view of the Costa Rican landscape with volcanoes in the distance and nature all around you. On exiting the airport, there is no trouble negotiating your way through unknown foreign city roads in your unfamiliar rental car, as your only options are a straightforward left or right when you meet the highway.

From Liberia airport you can be at the beach in as little as 20 minutes. Playa del Coco (the closest) is an old fishing village, that provides one of the best locations from which to enjoy a spot of diving or fishing on the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica. A little further away (about 45 minutes) is the Papagayo Peninsula, renowned for its beauty and the pleasure of having the largest area of all inclusive hotels in Costa Rica. This area is earmarked for a huge investment injection mostly from foreign investors who are seeing big development prospects here. Heading south you will find the famous beach of Tamarindo, just a hour and a half from Liberia. When you compare this to the 4 hour trip from San Jose, you can see the benefits especially for those whose time is short.

Liberia also provides an access point to some of the best Costa Rican National Parks and reserves. Santa Rosa National Park, the last remaining piece of dry forest in the region also contains a Costa Rican historical site, famous for the rebuff of the north american filibuster William Walker who attempted to invade Costa Rica in 1856. The park is also home to the famous Witchs Rock, renowned among surfers all around the world.

Just 45 minutes from Liberia is the Rincon de la Vieja National Park, home to the active volcano Rincon de la Vieja. The park includes several trails that pass by fumaroles and boiling mud pots. You can also reach the crater of this volcano and look down upon the acidic lake while taking the utmost care not to lose your footing!

The city of Liberia itself is a welcome relief for many foreigners from the chaos of San Jose. It bears the mark of a relaxed, provincial town, but it one awaking from its long slumber. The Guanacaste regions growth as a tourist destination has allowed for an increase in employment opportunities in Liberia, the business center for the region. This, along with the several university colleges in the town, has meant that a more vibrant, youthful culture is making itself apparent. This is especially evident in the proliferation of bars with a more modern, western style to add to the flavor of the local nightlife.

Liberia, is a town in the making and one hopes that it will continue in its beneficial growth to aid the local population and to delight visitors to Costa Rica.

The author, Julia Thurston, lives in Liberia and works through Liberia Costa Rica Info where you can find information on hotels, transportation and tours in Liberia, the North West Pacific beaches and the Guanacaste region.

Zanzibar the Quiet Beaches

Zanzibar, the Quiet Beaches
By Ian Williamson

Traveling to Zanzibar needs to be planned. Some areas of Zanzibar are commercialized and have lost the charm they once had. The quiet beaches are easy to find if you take a little time to plan where to go before you set sail for this spiced archipelago.

The main island usually referred to as Zanzibar Island is a tropical and east from the mainland of Tanzania; measuring 60 miles long and 20 miles wide. Zanzibar is popular because of its beautiful beaches and coral reefs, its palm trees, its seafood and the magic of historic Stone Town, which was recently declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

The northeast part of the island is an area that is unspoiled and is known as Matemwe. This part of the island is well known for its natural beauty and closeness to the beat diving sites - the contrasting colors of the Indian Ocean, the white sand beach, the extreme beauty of the coral reef of the Mnemba Atoll and the wild bush vegetation. There is a small village of fishermen, who go out sailing with their army of traditional dhows every morning.

Zanzibar has an international airport with direct connections to Europe and regional destinations (o/a Dar es Salaam, Nairobi). Travel by sea is also possible: there are regular ferry services between Zanzibar and Dar es Salaam. We can arrange transfers for you to/from the airport, the sea port or Stone Town.

Seafood is the specialty of the area, with all produce bought daily from the local market. Meals offering a delicious mix of African and European flavors. The early mornings and the sunrise is a sight to savor - as you enjoy tea or coffee served at your veranda. In the evening, the full moon rising out of the sea is a wonderful romantic experience you're not likely to forget. On moonless nights gaze and get lost in the star-filled sky.

Local snorkeling and diving sites are suitable for all levels of experience, from beginning snorklers or experienced divers. Variety is the key word on the reefs around Matemwe. Soft and hard corals, sponges and anemones abound, and you will be amazed by the sheer range of fish species to be found in these waters. You might find dolphins in the water or for the lucky ones - even spot a whale passing by the reef (best chance for whales in the period August October).

Visit the neighboring village to explore the local Zanzibar culture and village life and for those who wish to learn about the community projects that the Matemwe lodge is involved in: Matemwe Bungalows has created strong, mutually beneficial relationships with its neighbors and has undertaken various community projects, including the building of a local library.

This location is ideal for visits to Stone Town, Jozani Forest, Prison Island and spice tours.

Ziplock Bag Ideas for Outdoor Cooking

Zip-lock Bag Ideas for Outdoor Cooking
By Scott Carey

Zip-lock bags are extremely helpful when cooking outdoors. They come in a variety of sizes from 1 pint to 2 gallons. There is no need to buy expensive ones for most uses. You should be able to find off-brands at grocery stores, discount stores, or dollar stores. Here are some ideas and tips for using zip-lock bags to make your outdoor cooking job a little bit easier.

  • Pre-measure ingredients and put in zip-lock bags. For example, if you know you need 2 cups of flour for a recipe, measure those 2 cups into a zip-lock bag at home, label it, and all you have to do at the campsite is dump it in. This works great for rice, pasta, sugar, flour, instant mashed potatoes, powdered drink mix, and almost any other similar ingredient.
  • Pre-measuring and storing in zip-lock bags also works great for seasonings. Measure all the seasonings for a particular dish into a zip-lock bag. You don't have to take all the individual seasoning containers, nor worry about leaving one behind.
  • Put all the zip-lock bags and other ingredients for each meal into a large zip-lock bag (1 or 2 gallon). This keeps everything for the meal in one place. Add copies of the recipes, if needed, to the bag and you are ready to go.
  • Pre-mix ingredients and put in zip-lock bags. Cooking pancakes for breakfast? Mix all the dry ingredients together in a zip-lock bag, label it, then add the liquid ingredients to the bag and mix up when ready to cook. No dishes to wash. No cleanup. Just toss the empty bag in the garbage.
  • Zip-lock bags are perfect for marinating meat before you grill. You can even freeze the meats with the marinade, which allows you to get them ready far in advance.
  • Use zip-lock bags for leftovers and store in cooler. One great idea is to make omelets for the last breakfast with all the saved leftovers (depending on what you have). Just add eggs the zip-lock bags and mix up.
  • Precook rice or pasta at home and store in zip-lock bags. This makes it much easier to cook at the campsite, because all you have to do is heat it up.
  • Precut meat and store in zip-lock bags. You won't have to worry in camp about the messy cleanup needed if you do it at home. If you want to really save time, you can even pre-cook the meats and store in zip-lock bags until you needat camp. Just heat up and you are ready to go.
  • Precut vegetables and store in zip-lock bags. Cooking while camping can be more time consuming, but this tip will save you time by allowing you to do it ahead of time at home.
  • Store snacks in zip-lock bags. Trail-mix, snack mix, pretzels, dried fruit, etc., store great in zip-lock bags. You can even make separate bags for each member of your family or group so there isn't any quibbling over portions.

  • A Holiday in Rajasthan

    A Holiday in Rajasthan
    By Roozbegh Gazdar

Romancing History A Holiday in Rajasthan

Rajasthan, the name evokes myriad impressions an intricate tapestry of colour, sound and smell. Holidaying in Rajasthan brings one face to face with mammoth contradictions where royal grandeur is easily offset by rustic charm and lavish opulence belies ingenious survival. Geographically too, Rajasthan is a land of contrasts: dense forests give way to an arid landscape and lofty hills separate baking dunes from brimming lakes. And no Rajasthan holiday is complete without an experience of the spirited Rajputs, whose proud and haughty exterior conceals an inner friendliness and warm sense of hospitality.

Rajasthan, meaning the land of the kings, has a history dating back 5000 years. A Rajasthan holiday is the experience of a living tradition. Dotted with well-preserved architectural wonders echoing age-old legends, many of these, especially the ancient havelis are in use even today. Similarly, ancient temples in this mystic land have effortlessly spanned eons of worship by the devout as they resound even today with chanting and ringing of bells.

Holiday in Rajasthan! Follow in the footsteps of the ancient caravans as you travel through this ageless land by a camel safari or step into the shoes of kings, as you ride into palaces sitting atop an elephant. Track the tiger in wild Rajasthan or have a holiday adventure driving a jeep over sand dunes in a hip desert adventure.

    Cultural Rajasthan

Rajasthan is dotted with the reminders of its ancient past, its forts ringing with ballads of the valour and romance of the Rajputs. But the tourist is not a visitor to dead relics showcased in a museum. A Rajasthan holiday is an enthralling ride through the living portals of history.

Bikaner: Located in North Rajasthan, Bikaner is desert country famous for its medieval spirit, its monuments and camels. Junagarh fort, Lalgarh palace, Jain Haveli and Bhandeswari are a feast for the holiday crowd.

Jaipur: Rajasthans pink city offers a holiday with a refreshing blend of the traditional and the modern. Its attractions include the Hawa Mahal, Albert Hall, Jantar Mantar and the forts, Nahargarh, Jaigarh, Amber and Moti Dungri.

Jaisalmer: The magic of the desert is very alive in this legendary town famous for its havelis traditional mansions that are artistic expression with skilled craftsmanship, carvings and paintings. Other attractions include the breathtaking Jaisalmer Fort and the Tazia Towers.

Jodhpur: The ancient Marwar empire in the desert, this military town is also famous for the kingly sport of Polo. It is famous for its monuments including Umaid Bhawan Palace, Mehrangarh fort and Jaswant Thada.

Udaipur: Known for its lakes and palaces, this is the ultimate Rajasthan holiday. Udaipur epitomizes artistic endeavor from brilliant architecture and miniature painting to vibrant performing arts. Tourists are simply dazzled by the City Palace, Lake Palace, Crystal Gallery, Durbar Hall, Bagore-ki-haveli Dharohar, Jag Mandir, and Maharana Pratap Memorial.

    Wild Rajasthan Holidays

Rajasthan is also a haven for some thrilling wildlife holidays, housing as it does some of the best National Parks and Sanctuaries in India.

Ranthambore National Park: Located at the junction of the Aravalis and the Vindhyas, Rajasthans important hill ranges, this former hunting ground of the Maharajas is one of the best places in the world to see the tiger. Other wild life her includes sambar, chital, nilgai, hyena, caracal and panther.

Sariska National park: Situated among the rugged Aravali hills that dominate North West Rajasthan, Sariskas dry deciduous forests are home to a wealth of wildlife. Besides the tiger, a holiday here offers sambar, chital, chousingha, wildboar, langur, Rhesus macaque and a wealth of birds.

Keoladeo Ghana National Park: Originally the hunting preserve of the Maharaja of Bharatpur, this lovely bird sanctuary owes its existence to an artificial tank, which is home to a variety of birds, resident as well as migratory. The star attraction of a holiday in Bharatpur here is the Siberian Crane, a winter migrant that flies to Rajasthan all the way from Russia.

    Feisty Rajasthan Holidays

Holiday in Rajasthan for its people who dont look for reasons to celebrate. Fond of colour, mirth and pageantry, the irrepressible spirit of Rajasthan finds expression in a number of feasts, fairs and festivals that mark the seasons, commemorate occasions or simply let off steam!

Desert Festival: Holidaying here in winter, tourists find the desert around Jaisalmer bursting in a riot of colour and music. Around January, the Desert Festival presents an extravagant fanfare of Rajasthani men and women displaying the cultural wealth of their state.

    By Lea Adams

Every year millions of travelers and tourists visit Mexican coasts, riviera maya on one hand and Pacific coast on the other. However, Mexico has other charming sites to explore and one of them is the capital of the Mexican United States as the formal name of Mexico states it. The Federal District of Mexico City apart from colonial architecture that can be admired in the city centre, has also more ancient archeological sites as the ones located near Plaza del Zcalo where azteca archeologial temples as the site known as Templo Mayor discovers the beginnings of the city in front of travelers' eyes. Built at the beginning of the XVIth century during colonial dominion by the Spaniards, the Zocalo Square is the third biggest square in the world and is located on ancient ruins that reveals prehispanic cultures earlier than the Aztecas. Plaza del Zcalo is a place where centuries reunite and the proof resides in the blending between cultures and societies that succeded along the history in today's capital of Mexico. From Templo Mayor, witness of the most ancients ancestors through colonial period after discovering the American continent by the Europeans to Mexican Independence from Spain, this square abunds in history and traditions that worth to be discover by any visitor.

The impressive Palacio Nacional on one side of the square where today resides the Town Hall of Mexico City as well as the National Executive Power of the Mexican administration is worth visit especially when one has the chance to admire Diego Rivera's paintings. But Plaza del Zcalo shelters also one of the two Cathedrals of Mexico City built during three centuries: the Saint Nicholas Cathedral. Indeed, the city distinguish itself by having two cathedrals instead of one -the other is the ancient Cathedral of Virgin Guadeloupe (Catedral de la Virgen de Guadalupe), though the latter being quite ancient is not functional anymore to religious mass and for this reason the Catholic Church has built a new building nearby that has taken over its religious obligations-. Like a curiosity for those travelling by plane to Mexico City, pay attention while the plane aproaches the Benito Jurez Airport that the Mexican flag erected in the Plaza del Zcalo can be seen from the air. That gives visitors some idea of the patriotism level featuring this country. While being in the Zocalo Square if the traveler decides to go to other areas of the capital is best they call a taxi it they don't have a car rented for their stay.

Never venture out on the street to take cab that passes by, always go through a taxi company amongst the serious taxi services existing in Mexico city. The tasty and rich Mexican breakfasts that finish at 12 o'clock are a delightful experience for travelers that want to know more about one of the finest and more complex cuisines in the world. A mixture between maya and azteca roots combined with a colonial touch has created the cocina criolla with incredible dishes that makes this gastronomic experience unforgettable. In front of the Palacio Nacional, that is on the other side of the Zocalo Square, the Majestic hotel , at the upper floor offers the Sunday's Mexican Breakfasts famous among many Mexico City residents as well as other connaisseurs of the cities attractive curiosities. So a perfect combinations of delicious Mexican dishes, a pottery boiled black and aromatic coffee while the Zocalo Square reveals itself in all its splendour.

Alaskan Dungeness Crabbing for Cruise Ship Passengers

Alaskan Dungeness Crabbing for Cruise Ship Passengers
    By Larry Wiseman

Coming to Southeast Alaska this upcoming summer. If you fancy the taste of succulent crab and want to experience the adventure of catching some, then consider an excursion in Ketchikan. Ketchikan is the gateway to Alaska and is located on the Inside Passage. Ketchikan is an island located on Rivellagegedo and only accessible by air and sea. Ketchikan is also part of the Tongass National Rainforest. We get lots of rain! Just visit the rain gauge located downtown if you stop by for a visit. If your taking a cruise ship then this will be your first stop in Alaska.

Dungeness crabbing is a treat indeed. Its an opportunity to get out on the water, sightsee, and experience what catching crab is all about. Granted, this is not like the Deadliest Catch you may have seen on Discovery. There are several locations that are within range that allow cruise ship passengers to take advantage if they choose. A fourty five minute ride to Bostwick Inlet is a popular fishing spot. It is protected from the weather for the most part. Upon arrival you can bait your crab pots. I usually use herring and a carcass from salmon, halibut, or a codfish. Crab can be caught in as little as half an hour. You can only be keep the males as it is illegal to keep females. The males have to be 6 1/2 inches across the carapace in order to harvest. Males molt during the summer and fall months. Dungeness crab harvested at times of molting have a softer shell and the meat doesn't quite fill the shell. Some find it easier to pick the meat out of the shell and others complain that there is not enough meat in the shell. You'll have to decide for yourself if you come across one.

Cooking the crab is quite easy. Some people add Old Bay or Johnny's and some prefer adding their favorite beer. Once the water starts to boil I usually let it do so for about 10 minutes and call it good. Eat and enjoy, the fresher the better.

Discover The Ice Paradise Of Alaska

Discover The Ice Paradise Of Alaska
    By Tom Sample

Alaska is USA's 49th state and it became part of the country in 1959. Where does it get its name from? It is derived from the term aleut alyeska which means a greater land. It lies way up on the Yukon Trail and borders a part of Canada. The Arctic Circle lies within it and it has tall, snow-covered mountains. It has a lot of land area and is the largest state in the US. It also has the largest coastline of all the states.

The first inhabitants in Alaska probably came through the Bering Land Bridge. This piece of land used to link Alaska and Russia way back in the Ice Age but it has long since been submerged. Who were these first settlers? They were the Yupik Eskimos, the Aleuts, The Inuit, Inupiaq and other American Indians. In fact, this was probably the way most ancient settlers to America came through. Over the years, Alaska grew to be a part of Russia. In 1867, it was bought by the US for 7 million dollars.

Like Hawaii, Alaska does not have any other US state along its borders. In fact, it is around 500 miles away from the country which it belongs to. What is it like? For one, it is a state that has a lot of water. It has many islands and around 3.5 million lakes and that's just counting the ones that measure over 20 acres in area! It also has a lot of wetlands and marshlands and, of course, a lot of its land is made up of glaciers or frozen rivers. Most of Alaska is still very much a winter wonderland. Vast stretches of white snow interspersed with beautiful hills that are picturesque with tall trees and sparking waterfalls.

Thanks to its abundance of water, it abounds in fish as well. Little wonder it is the favored destination for so many seasoned anglers. There are any number of fishing tours one could take and experienced guides take you to the best spots. With so much fish around, Alaska's main export just has to be seafood! However, as agriculture isn't much of an industry, and transport infrastructure within the state is not too good, food prices tend to be high.

Despite all its natural beauty, many Alaskans tend to suffer from depression. Is it the isolation or the cold? Whatever the reason, there is domestic abuse and a high crime rate and also instances of suicide. A lot of it can probably be blamed on the high incidence of alcoholism here. Yet another problem seems to be the fact that youngsters tend to leave Alaska as soon as they finish school or college. Their destination? The exciting world that is the rest of the US. This happens especially with the best students. So the ones left behind are the ones who do not perform as well, which means a slow winding down of talent within the state. Is there a solution? The schools and universities are trying to tackle the problem by offering the best 10% of students a 4-year scholarship.

The cruises provide a combined ability for travelers to enjoy the beauty of Alaskan lands and take part of many entertainment activities that are available on cruise ships.

How To Deal With Bears When Camping In Alaska

How To Deal With Bears When Camping In Alaska
    By Joshua Poyoh

When camping in Alaska, be warn that there are lots of bear roaming around. When I was rafting the Anasek and Noatak rivers, I saw at least a grizzly dozen bears. One bear even harassed me down a river bank our first day in the bush. Fortunately, none of us was eaten or injured. They were actually after our food. Therefore it is important to camp in the Alaskan wilderness and be safe from the bears. A little bit of care and preparation is needed.

One of the most important things to remember while camping in Alaska is that bears like the smell of food. What you don't want is for them to smell food on you, since that makes you smell a lot like food. This is bad. So, the best precaution you can take is to make sure that you keep your tent, sleeping bag, and sleeping area free from any smells of food. It is best to cook and eat all of your food at least 100 yards downwind of your tent site. Also, be sure to pack your food separately from your tent and sleeping bag, and don't keep other things that smell interesting like bug spray or toothpaste at your tent site.

Many people who camps in Alaska carry with them some sort of protection against bears, usually in the form of a firearm or can of bear spray. For years firearms were the only choice for protection against bears, but as time went by it became apparent that many people weren't comfortable carrying rifles and handguns with them into the woods.

Bear spray allows anyone to carry a bear repellant with them, and it's advisable to do so while camping in Alaska. Though you're likely never to need it, a can of bear spray can save your life in the unlikely event that you're attacked by a grizzly bear. Just be sure to point the spray downwind and to leave the area afterwards, as the spices left by the spray days later can be attractive to bears later on.

Camping in Alaska can be without problems and safe. Do take the necessary precaution and safeguard against the bears. However, the changing Alaskan weather conditions are also another danger that campers cannot ignore. Many campers are caught off guard and unprepared. Check the weather conditions before you go and pack the necessary equipment for any weather conditions. Be aware of the surroundings and what is happening.

    Alaska Cruises

    Alaska Cruises
    By Jennifer Bailey

Alaskan cruises are more in demand than cruises to the Caribbean or the Bahamas. People prefer cruising in Alaska due to its cool climate. In the summer months, Alaska is comfortably warm and the sun is up most of the time. Cruisers in Alaska see beautiful scenery wherever they go. During the peak cruising season in Alaska, which is from May to September, all major cruise ships are booked well in advance. Alaskan cruises are also a bit steeper than other cruises a seven-day cruise may cost $800 to $1,000 per head.

Several famous ships conduct regular Alaska cruises in the peak season. Some of these ships are the Dawn Princess, the Sun Princess, the Statendam, the Volendam and the Norwegian Star. The pioneer ship for Alaska cruises is the Royal Caribbean Radiance. Cruise ships have their own itineraries there are special ships for inland cruising and marine cruising. There are also small ships that can accommodate less than a hundred people.

Alaskan cruises can be for a week or nine to ten days. There are several activities that can be performed onboard. Whale watching is one of the most popular activities. Cruise ships have their own bands, which play music especially jazz and folk music for the cruisers. There are dance programs with live or recorded musical accompaniment. Other forms of onboard entertainment are Broadway shows, comedy performances, and dances. Food is of local varieties and is served by uniformed waiters and attendants.

An Alaskan cruise is not just an onboard sailing experience; there are several shore activities provided. People can go whitewater rafting and boating. Canoeing and kayaking are other popular features of cruises. Ketchikan is a popular kayaking hub. One more important attraction is underwater sightseeing, which may be provided in a submersible submarine or with snorkeling or scuba equipment. Such cruises are also known as adventure cruises.

Visiting Alaska is more expensive than going to Europe from America. Cruise ships leave from two destinations Seattle and Vancouver and end in Seward. Rails, cruise ships or vehicles cannot access interior places of Alaska. Floatplanes are used as transport to access these places.

The charm of Alaskan cruises is the climate. Since Alaska is snow-ridden and inaccessible for the major part of the year, the cruising season is the summer. This period is full of activities and natural beauty. Due to the short period of accessibility, the demand for Alaskan cruises is high.

Alaska Fishing Still Rules the World

Alaska Fishing Still Rules the World
    By Jesse Glaves

Industrial growth and overfishing have led to disturbance of the runs in many of the worlds top fishing locations. Washington, Oregon and California who once enjoyed healthy runs of ocean run salmon, can attest to the destruction of their native runs.

Pollution and industrial growth have decimated many natural river stocks to the point of no repair. Many people are beginning to assume that this is expected wherever you fish, and that the days of healthy wild runs and stocks of fish have long since past.

This is hardly the case in Alaska. Alaska has enjoyed their late start at statehood and have been lucky to learn from the mistakes of other troubled fisheries across the world. Not only did Alaska start with larger runs than other areas in the first place, they have also initiated protection of their rivers and lakes to assure that their waterways don't see the same destructive fate.

Runs of Salmon and other native fish are as healthy as ever in Alaska, largely due to careful management. Some runs of fish are actually healthier today than they were 50 years ago.

Then of course, there are countless areas of Alaska accessible only by air, that humans normally can't fish. Yes, Alaska is still one of that last frontiers in the world, and for more than just fishing. Plan a trip today and experience nature in the raw for for yourself. Alaska fishing truly does still rule the world.

    Alaska Cruise Ships

    Alaska Cruise Ships
    By Jennifer Bailey

Several new and old ships ply the Alaskan waters taking cruisers along. There are ships are of all possible classes. There are big and small ships, luxury ships and ships with balconies in their cabins and more deck space. People who wish to go on a cruise must ascertain, in advance, what kind of a ship they would be on.

One of the ships currently offering Alaskan cruises is the Radiance of the Seas, belonging to Royal Caribbean International. It is a huge ship, with the space to accommodate 2,100 people. Its glass elevators look out into the sea and provide a breathtaking view. Onboard entertainment facilities include the Jakarta Lounge and the Singapore Sling. Besides these it has the Aurora Theater and the Art Nouveau Casino Royale. It has two sister ships, Serenade of the Seas and Vision of the Seas, which ply exclusively in Alaska.

Another famous Alaskan cruise ship is the Celebrity Infinity. It can accommodate 1,950 people. Its features include an aromatherapy session named AquaSpa, a musical library called Enjoy Notes, and the Trellis Restaurant. Its sister ships, Summit and Millennium, also sail on Alaskan cruises.

Other big ships that offer Alaskan cruises are Radisson Seven Seas Mariner, Carnival Spirit and seven ships from the cruise company Princess. The Norwegian Cruise Lines also sends its ships for Alaskan cruises. Some of them are Norwegian Dream, Norwegian Spirit, Norwegian Star, and Norwegian Sun.

Apart from the mainstream big ships, there are several small ships offering Alaskan cruises for those on tighter budgets. Small ships provide more adventure and offshore activities than bigger ships. They may carry less than 100 passengers. Some companies providing small ships for Alaskan cruises are Lindblad Expeditions, the Clipper Cruise Lines, and Cruise West.

The experiences of cruising in Alaska on mainstream ships and small ships are totally different. Big ships are designed for people who are looking for more luxury and comfort, while small ships are designed for adventure seekers. Big ships have better facilities to keep everyone amused all the time, while small ships give opportunities to build more friends and camaraderie.

    Alaska Cruise FAQs
    By Jennifer Bailey

Alaska, along with its breathtaking scenic beauty, is also known for its unpredictable weather and fluctuating temperatures. Therefore, it is essential for the tourists to have some general information about the state, its weather, seasonal temperature, and clothing required. Before planning a trip to this beautiful spot, it is important to go through extensive information on Alaskan cruises.

The most important information sought is what would be the best season for such a cruise. Tourists usually enquire about the weather conditions, and general temperature levels, in order to prepare for the tour accordingly, with sufficient and appropriate clothing. People also enquire about the cruise lines sailing to Alaska, including the availability of small ships. The duration of these cruises is another factor in case of families with toddlers.

It is said that it never gets dark in Alaska, and hence this is one of the most frequently asked question by the tourists, to check if it is true. The visibility time and period of the whales, and other sea-creatures, can be some of the most relevant, of the various other questions concerning the cruise. Parents try to find out whether it would be ideal for small kids, as the weather conditions are extremely cold and difficult to manage. Fun-lovers usually enquire about fishing and casino provisions. The appropriate side of the ship, offering the best views of the glaciers and Mount Mc Kinley are also enquired about. Cases of seasickness require serious consideration before planning an Alaskan cruise.

The most important part of the cruise would be the bookings, without which the experience cannot happen at all. Therefore, it is imperative to find out the booking options, payment methods, and availability of the cruise bookings. Considering all the conditions, whether Alaska can be an ideal vacation spot, has often been one of the major points for travelers to think upon. Tourists also enquire about the options of extending the vacation, and people from other countries tend to find out about the necessity of a passport for the trip.

Denali National Park in Alaska 2006 Travel

Denali National Park in Alaska - 2006 Travel
    By Ryan T.

The best sightseeing I have ever experienced was this year during a recent trip to Denali National Park in Alaska. I could not have hoped for better weather, wildlife viewing opportunities or friends to share it all with. Our accommodations at the Denali Princess Lodge were fantastic as well.

This fall I was lucky enough to get a call from my brother, an aspiring photographer. He had just been awarded a Fall Drive In Permit to Denali National Park. They are issued by lottery and allow a limited number of drivers to enter the park by vehicle. There are only four days in the entire year in which you can do this. I was thrilled, excited and eagerly awaiting my adventure of a lifetime.

We enter the Alaska Park around 4:30 am so that we could beat the other drivers and make it to a pass called Polychrome for the sunrise. Polychrome got its name for multitudes of colors displayed throughout its rocky layers. Normally this is quite a site but at sunrise it was absolutely amazing. We were also able to catch a great viewing opportunity of Mount McKinley at sunrise. There were a few people around for this and it truly was a marvelous Alaskan experience.

Next we were able to see some wildlife up close. We came across three brown bears, a mother and two cubs. They were eating berries just off the side of the road. Around the next corner we came across a pack of wolves. They were out hunting and just happened to be heading unknowingly straight towards the brown bears. We had to turn around to watch this incredible encounter and Im glad we did.

As the wolves approached the brown bears they let their presence be known. They surrounded the bears and consistently went in close then pulled back to a safe distance while trying to drive the bears out of their territory. The mother bear was somewhat concerned because of her cubs. She kept standing up on her hind legs to see over the vegetation and follow what the wolves were up to. This of course led to many great photo opportunities. Finally after about an hour or so the bears moved back and went over the mountain to the next valley.

We continued our trek back into Denali National Park to the very end of the road. Roughly 90 miles back you will find Wonder Lake. Alaska has many beautiful lakes but this one was simply amazing. The water was crystal clear and so calm you could see the reflection of Mount McKinley just as if you were looking into a mirror. We spent some time at the little pullout the park has there and then began our return trip.

On the way back out we saw several moose. This time of year the moose in Alaska are in rut and you will find many Bull Moose ready to compete for the females. We only saw a little confrontation between the moose however we did see several Bull Moose with racks that had to have measured over 60 inches wide. That is quite impressive by all accounts.

We came across several Alaskan Dall sheep, more brown bears, a beaver, spruce hens, a falcon and a plethora of ground squirrels. The fall colors were out, the sky was blue and this was definitely a once in a lifetime trip through Denali National Parks in Alaska. In my opinion, it was well worth the cost of the travel to Alaska.

Alaska Glacier Cruises: Alaska Up Close and Personal

Alaska Glacier Cruises: Alaska Up Close and Personal
    By Ron Richards

What do you have in mind for your next vacation? Are you planning another trip to the same tired beach that you visit every year or an adventure to a controlled, commercialized theme park? If so, I have a suggestion for you: Alaska glacier cruises.

What if I told you that you could do something truly unique and adventurous, something that the whole family would love? What if I told you that there was a family cruise destination so breathtakingly beautiful and teeming with wildlife that you could spend days captivated at the rail of a cruise ship and still not get enough? Would you be interested? Sure you would.

Few people have visited Alaska without having been changed by the experience. Much of the terrain consists of gorgeous, formidable glaciers and ice fields which cover over 5% of Alaska's land surface.

This natural beauty can be seen from many top tourist destinations of Alaska including Juneau, Valdez, Seward and the Matanuska Valley, but is usually only fully appreciated with an up close and personal view that only a cruise through the inland waterways can afford. From this vantage point you will stand spellbound by tidewater glaciers that reach over 100 ft. in height and the antics of wildlife such as humpback whales, orcas, sea lions, dolphins, brown bears and bald eagles.

In Alaska, there is a multitude of attractions that will keep you coming back for more. Cruise the smooth inland waterways of Alaska and come surprising close to the sheer ice faces of these magnificent, natural phenomenons; port at luxuriant destinations complete with fine dining and unique entertainment; and make memories that will last a lifetime.

The truth is: The popularity of Alaska glacier cruises is growing in leaps and bounds due to the awe-inspiring beauty of Alaska's glaciers and the affordability and wide range of cruise packages available. You can choose from one-day inland cruise packages which are as priced as low as $50 per person to a luxurious six night cruise on a deluxe designer yacht for as little as $4,000 per person. Of course there is a wide range of cruise options that fall between these two extremes. Take for instance the seven day voyage available through a well-known cruise provider. For under $2,000 per person, this trip affords passengers the opportunity to cruise several top Alaskan inside passages aboard a luxuriant cruise liner and port at several top destinations.

As you can see, there is no end to the possibilities associated with Alaska glacier cruises. Why don't you look into the possibilities that these cruises can open up for you and your family? The only thing you have to lose is another boring summer vacation.

A lifelong Alaskan, Ron Richards lives in the beautiful Matanuska Valley. Ron invites you to come and see Alaska. One excellent way to enjoy Alaska is by taking an affordable Alaska cruise. Visit Ron's site at http://www.findanalaskacruise.com.

    Alaska Vegetation Wildlife and People

Alaska - Vegetation, Wildlife and People
    By Michael Russell

Soils suitable for tillage are located in the lowlands and valley areas where they may have originated from river deposits. They contrast with the shallow soils on the steeper slopes and uplands. Permafrost is common north of the Alaska Range, thawing out only at the surface in summer creating waterlogged conditions. Roads and buildings are subject to damage in these areas.

Extensive coniferous forests adorn the slopes of the south-eastern mountains. In the interior the forest cover thins out giving way to grasslands and marsh. North of the Brooks Range are the treeless plains of the tundra, supporting mosses, lichens and grasses capable of surviving the severe climatic conditions which are present in those areas. The caribou live here as well as wild fowl and small fur-bearing mammals, which are essential to the native economy.

River fish, such as salmon and sea mammals such as the seal and the whale, are also captured. In the south the larger mammals, including the brown bear and prolific salmon streams are an attraction to sportsmen.

Alaska has the smallest population of all the American States. About a fifth is native Indian and Eskimo. Their standard of living, though improving, is lower than that of the white population. Many depend on a subsistence economy. The white population enjoys a high living standard; many come for short and profitable periods on contract, often during the summer months.

The temporary population gives the State a predominance of males and a per capita income, which is one of the highest in the USA. Alaska's settlements are small and scattered widely with some concentration along the Gulf Coast. The three largest centres, Anchorage, Fairbanks and Juneau, are service centres for numerous resource-oriented communities, fishing settlements and timber camps. To the north and west of the railroad and highway system, on the coast and in the river valleys are a large number of native settlements, which depend on subsistence hunting and fishing.

Less than 10 per cent of tillable land in Alaska is used, partly due to the expense of making the land productive. The principle farming area is north of Anchorage in the Matanuska Valley. Eggs, potatoes, dairy products, lettuces and cabbages are the most important items produced for local consumption. Farming is also found around Fairbanks. Moderate climate and large areas of grassland near the Gulf of Alaska have encouraged cattle farming.

Vast forests are located in two main areas. The coastal forests of the southeast produce 90 per cent of the State's wood, mainly western hemlock and sitka spruce. Both are situated near tidewater, which enables transport to the pulp mills at Ketchikan and Sitka easy.

Although gold has declined since the initial goldrush in the 1890s, it still remains the most valuable mineral resource. Coal is also found throughout the State, the most important field near Fairbanks. Other minerals found include gravel, sand, lead and mercury. There are also deposits of iron in the southeast.

Packing for Your Alaska Cruise Vacation

Packing for Your Alaska Cruise Vacation
    By Marleny Anicama

The sometimes extreme and always unpredictable Alaska weather will be a big factor in the success of your vacation. During your Alaska cruise vacation you may experience temperature differences from the 40s to the 80s (single digits to 20s Celsius). The days will be long, with the sun all but refusing to set, and people will be energized by the extra daylight hours.

Youll likely encounter some rain, but there could also be weeks of sunny skies with no rain at all. Youre less likely to encounter snow, but it is a remote possibility, especially in the spring. Weather plays a factor in what you need to pack, with the must-haves on an Alaska cruise including a raincoat, an umbrella, and comfortable walking shoes that you dont mind getting wet or muddy.

A swimsuit is also a must if your ship has a pool (sometimes covered, sometimes heated) or hot tubs. Even in the summer, temperatures in Alaska may not go much higher than the 50s or 60s (low or high teens Celsius), although they also may go into the 70s or 80s (low to high 20s Celsius). Having layers of clothing that you can peel off if the weather is hot and add if the weather is cold is the most convenient approach.

    Important to Pack Items

What you choose to pack obviously involves a lot of personal choice, but heres a suggested list of some items that everyone should bring along for their Alaska cruise:

    - A lightweight, waterproof coat or jacket
    - Two sweaters or fleece pullovers, or substitute a warm vest for one
    - A warm hat and gloves
    - Two to four pairs of pants or jeans
    - Two pairs walking shoes (preferably waterproof)
    - Sunscreen (SPF 15 or higher)
    - Bug spray (Alaska has 55 different kinds of mosquitoes)
    - Sunglasses
    - Binoculars (some small ships stock them for guest use, but none of the big ships do)v- A camera, preferably with a telephoto or zoom lens
    - Film (bring more than you think youll need)
    - Formal wear (with accessories) if your ship has formal nights (not all do)
    - Semis dressy wear for informal nights

Some people suffer over what to pack for a cruise vacation, but theres no reason to worry. Except for the addition of a formal night or two, an Alaska cruise vacation is really no different from any resort vacation. And in some cases, its much more casual. Dont feel you have to go out and buy cruise wear. Sweatshirts, jeans, and jogging outfits are what is must used during the day.

Dinner is dress up time on most ships, although several have begun to offer more casual alternatives. And the small adventure type ships are all casual all the time. Generally, ships describe proper dinner attire as formal, informal or semiformal (the two terms mean the same thing in this case), or casual. There are usually 2 formal nights and 2 informal (or semiformal) nights during a weeklong cruise, with the rest casual; check with your Alaska cruise line for specifics.

Formal, although the term has gotten somewhat more relaxed recently, generally means a tux or dark suit with tie for men, and a nice cocktail dress, long dress, gown, or dressy pantsuit for women. Informal (or semiformal) is a jacket, tie, and dress slacks, or a light suit, for men (jeans are frowned upon), and a dress, skirt and blouse, or pants outfit for women (the ubiquitous little black dress is appropriate here).

Casual at dinner means a sports shirt or open-collar dress shirt with slacks for men (some will also wear a jacket), and a casual dress, pants outfit, or skirt and blouse for women. Recently, a new term (country-club casual) has developed. This is pretty much the same as informal without the tie. For country club casual nights, dress as you would to go out to dinner at a midrange restaurant.

Many ships offer dry cleaning and laundry services (for a fee, of course), and some offer coin operated laundry facilities. Check your Alaska cruise lines brochures for details. Using these services can save you a lot of packing. Lastly, dont worry! Packing should be a simple task. Pack before hand, around a 1-2 weeks before your Alaska cruise and make a checklist to make sure you have all your necessities to have a relaxing and amazing Alaska cruise vacation.

    Cruises To Alaska

    Cruises To Alaska
    By Jerrick Foo

If you need some advice where to cruise to, I will recommend you to consider Alaska. An Alaskan cruise will bring you to wondrous sights of mountains, fjords and lush trees and nature wildlife. Expect to see big whales, tetchy icebergs, bald eagles, sharp ravens and huge ice fields when you visit Alaska.

    Whale Watching

Whale watching has long been one of the top-most draws of Alaska. As a matter of fact, many Alaskan cruise liners have made whale watching a focal point of their cruise programs, with special whale experts onboard to explain the behavior of these big marine mammals to interested cruisers. If you are after an elusive encounter with these large, graceful sea creatures, I would recommend you to opt for the smaller Alaskan cruise ships instead. These ships are able to navigate their way to harder to reach areas prohibited to bigger cruise ships. These out of bounds areas tend to be the whales' favorite hangouts.

    Sport Activities

Besides whale watching, I would recommend you the following sporty activities - kayaking, mountain kayaking, river rafting, dog sledding - exciting activities that you can seldom find in other cruise packages. You can either book with the cruise liners or at the ports of calls for these kinds of activities. Rates are cheaper at ports of calls but you risk having a rotten egg day compared to if you book with reputable cruise liners.

    Adventures Activities

There are many interesting places to cover in Alaska, and it's impossible to cover them all unless you have the time. However, if you are a first timer to Alaska, these attractions are ones that you will not want to miss - Denali National Park, Glennallen and Artic Circle Tours .

Denali National Park is at the heart of the interior of Alaska. Wildlife is the theme of this place and over here; you have a chance of getting close to animals like grizzly bears and ravenous wolves.

Glennallen is a historic mining town at Alaska. Fishing in the Gulkana and Klutina rivers is a popular activity during the summer here. You can find a local guide to supply the boat and gear to take you upriver and go fishing to catch some grayling, trout, or ling cod for dinner.

If you want a lasting memory of Alaksa, then the Artic Circle Tours is one you will not want to miss. A 3-days package flight-seeing tour will see you hover past the Mighty Yukon River and Ray and White Mountains. You can take a photo at the Arctic Circle and have an overnight in Coldfoot.

Cruise liners like Holland America, Princess, Royal Caribbean, Princess and Celebrity offers packages to this region.

    Alaska Cruise Reviews

    Alaska Cruise Reviews
    By Jennifer Bailey

Reviewing a cruise line is not easy as most people on board are having fun, and on a cruise people generally tend to overlook petty shortcomings. Moreover, most existing cruises have been around for more than a decade, and hence they have already perfected most of their shortcomings. Some Alaska cruises that have consistently been at the top of the savvy cruisers list are those provided by Royal Caribbean, Princess, Celebrity, and Carnival.

The Royal Caribbean line has won great accolades for its ship Radiance of the Seas. Beginning with the reception and the checking in, everything is systematically organized. It stops at Juneau, Skagway, Hubbard Glaciers, and Ketchikan during its seven-day cruise. Shopping in Juneau is a memorable experience, as is kayaking in Ketchikan and the glacier exploration at Hubbard Glaciers. There are several onboard activities Broadway performances, a silhouette act and a comedy act as a farewell show on the last night. The only drawback may be the large number of people on board about 2,500 of them which may not be appealing to the peace-loving cruiser.

All ships of the Princess cruise line have got rave reviews from cruisers. They come highly recommended by cruise agencies as well. They follow the same itinerary as the Royal Caribbean and have an excellent and knowledgeable staff. The great attractions of Princess ships are the dark wood mahogany furniture in some of their cabins and the ship memorabilia available for sale. The dining rooms are arranged forward, and the theater seats are thoughtfully arranged to provide all with an unobstructed view, free from poles and other obstacles. The Princess line is a very experienced line and offers customized cruises to its passengers.

Carnival and Celebrity both rate high on the cruisers list. They have reliable ships and staff and good outside balconies, which provide excellent views of natural scenery.

Among the small ship category, Clipper, American Safari, and Cruise West are considered to be great cruise lines. They provide the adventure seeker a host of activities to do while on the cruise.

    Alaska Cruises with Land Tours

    Alaska Cruises with Land Tours
    By Jennifer Bailey

An Alaskan cruise can be a memorable experience combined with snow-capped mountains, pine forests adorning the coastlines, sparkling glaciers, and an abundance of wildlife. The towns and villages are full of historical interests to attract tourists in their exploration.

The cruising season starts with the advent of summer, as winter is harsh and cold in Alaska. The cruises depart from Seattle, Washington, and Vancouver in Canada. The peak season is considered to be between the months of May and September. An Alaska cruise usually last a week taking the tourists along the Alaskan coastlines, through the Indian Passage. The ports of Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway, and Sitka are usually covered in the cruise. Other cruise routes may include Prince William Sound, located near Anchorage, and run through the Alaskan Peninsula to the Bering Sea. In case of long tours, passengers are required to return via train or plane, as they are usually a one-way trip. Each port visited has historical relevance and offers varying attractions, to impart different tastes of the individual towns and cities.

The largest mountain of North America, Mount McKinley located in the interior regions of Alaska, between Anchorage and Fairbanks, can also be visited during the Alaska Cruise. Seeing whales from the deck of the ship is part of the Alaska cruise, where sometimes tourists even hire small boats, for a whale watching tour. This is one of the most exciting parts of such cruises.

These cruises do not just provide an onboard sailing experience, but also land tours and on the shore activities. Boating and whitewater rafting, canoeing, and kayaking are some of the most popular activities. Underwater sightseeing in submarines, snorkeling, and scuba adventures form the adventures included in these cruises.

An Alaskan cruise can be very expensive, and hence, people are advised to check very carefully, while deciding on the plans and arrangements.

Photographing Alaska From a Cruise Ship

Photographing Alaska From a Cruise Ship
    By Patty Hankins

Last month, we took a cruise through Alaska's Inside Passageon Cruise West's Spirit of Endeavour. Prior to the trip, weweren't sure what our photography options would be. Usuallywe're up before sunrise shooting, and then scouting duringthe day, returning late afternoon to a few select spots. Weknew on a cruise we wouldn't have this type of control overwhere and when we'd be able to do our photography. We endedup being very pleasantly surprised at the wildlife andlandscapes we were able to photograph. You can see ourphotos from our trip on our website.

Based on our trip, we have some tips on how you too can getsome great photos on your Alaskan cruise:

1.Take your cruise on one of the smaller ships. The Spiritof Endeavour carries 102 passengers and is one of thesmallest cruise ships touring the Inside Passage. Some ofthe larger ships we saw carried over 2000 passengers. Due toits size, our ship could dock at many of the smaller portsand cruise in shallower waters than the larger ships. Whenwe were in port, we were 2 of 102 people getting off theship, rather than a pair among thousands.

2.Choose you itinerary based on your photographicpriorities. We wanted to see and photograph wildlife. So wechose the Cruise West itinerary that made a stop in Hyder, where both brown and black bears fish in the same stream. Our trip also included a full day in Glacier Bay NationalPark, and a day cruising in Tracy Arm and Frederick Sound.

3.Sunrises, sunsets, and golden light photos are going tobe tough to get. In general, the cruise ships do theirtraveling starting late afternoon/early evening, through thenight, and early morning. This is to arrive at yourdestination when ational people want to be up and about(typically after breakfast, and ending before dinner at thelatest). So during the typical hours that we would be outfor landscape photography (before sunrise to one hour after, and one hour before sunset until dark), the boat istraveling between locations. We were fortunate that much ofthe trip was overcast (which makes for nice, diffuse lightfor wildlife photography), and we passed some sceniclocations while traveling. Landscape photos taken from theship were done hand-held, usually with an image stabilizedlens - using a tripod on a moving ship is not that helpful.

4.Sign up for shore expeditions early. Some of our bestphotos came from our jet boat trip to the LeConte Glacier. This was one of the two shore excursions we signed up for onthe trip. There were less than 20 spaces available on theexcursion, and they filled up quickly. We made our shoreexcursion reservations at least a month in advance, and wegot some of the last few spaces on this particular trip.Note that the side trips cost extra, but the trip to LeConteGlacier was well worth it.

5.Bring lots of film or storage space for digital files andtake lots of photos. Between the two of us, we took close to6000 photos on our cruise. The photographic opportunities onthe trip were amazing. So be sure to pack lots of film orstorage media for your digital camera. Even better, takealong a laptop computer or backup storage device so you canreuse your storage media during the trip.

6.Bring your long lenses. This was one trip where we reallyappreciated having our longest lenses with us. Bill's mainsetup for the week was his Canon 100-400 lens, a 1.4Xteleconverter, and a Canon 20D (which has the 1.6 digitalmultiplier effect due to the smaller sensor). Patty mainlyused a Canon 5D (full frame sensor) and a Canon 70-300 lens.A wide angle lens is a must when traveling through thefjords, however.

7.Talk with the ship's crew about photo spots. The ships(and their crew) visit these same locations week after week. They know more or less what to expect in terms of sceneryand wildlife. On our cruise, there were two expeditionspecialists who provided all sorts of information about thelocations we were visiting, and the wildlife we would beseeing. In addition, one of the deckhands was an avidphotographer, he let us know about a couple of specificplaces to look for eagles and other wildlife.

8.This type of cruise is a good compromise for the groupwith photographers and non-photographers. There was plentyof sightseeing for the non-photographers (as long as theywere into scenic landscapes, wildlife, whale watching andsuch) and plenty of chances for photography. This alsomakes a nice way to see a number of locations in a brieftime, for those who don't have a whole lot of time to spend. This way we could take notes on where we might want to gofor a photo trip to spend more time looking for specificsubjects.

We hope our tips will help you get better photos on yourAlaskan cruise. Have fun!

Fishing The Great Frontier That Is Alaska

Fishing The Great Frontier That Is Alaska
    By Michael Russell

Fishing in Alaska is perhaps a dream that every angular has. The rugged frontier with thousands of streams, rivers, lakes and even the ocean has lured anglers to Alaska for years. There are many options available now including taking an ocean charter boat, heading to rivers in a jet or drift boat or by plane to a remote area of Alaska. Alaska has a population of one person per square mile so expect to have plenty of elbowroom on those lakes and streams.

Seward, Alaska is the home to the best Halibut fishing in the world. Daily charter boats leave Seward daily to give you the fight of your life. These monsters are huge and can reach 300 pounds easily and some closer to 400 pounds. One of these sea monsters will keep you on your toes as you fight for hours to bring home this trophy. Silver salmon are not as large, usually around 10 to pounds but the record is 100 pounds. King salmon are a bit larger running in the neighborhood of 70 pounds. The summer months bring many anglers from all over the world to compete in derbies or just fish for fun. There is even packaging and shipping available if you want your friends to have some of the award winning halibut that Alaska offers. There may even be enough for everyone to enjoy.

Fly-fishing is another option you have while visiting Alaska. You can take a small charter plane to a remote lake or stream. These planes have been operating for years and are equipped with floats for water take-offs and landings. They can easily take you where the fish are and the people are not. Fishing this way offers you access to the most remote regions of Alaska and is fully equipped with a tour guide, fishing gear and anything else you may need. Anchorage offers many options while choosing a small charter plane.

You can also fish from a jet boat out of Talkeetna, Alaska. The Talkeetna River is the home to the second largest run of migrating fish in the world. These jet boats provide you with not only an experienced guide and fishing equipment but also access to remote areas that rarely see people. These jet boats can reach over 200 miles of prime fishing. There are full-day and half-day excursions to choose. The only thing you need to fish Alaska is a fishing license and a sense of adventure.

These are just a few of the fishing excursions you can experience in Alaska. The things to keep in mind are finding a charter with experienced guides. These guides will know where the fish are for that time of year and the exact technique to use to catch them. Planning a trip to Alaska is costly and you do not want to finally get there only to have an inexperienced guide lead you in all the wrong directions. Make sure to book ahead of time especially in the months of July where tourism is the busiest.

How to See the Best of Alaska's Nature Mountains and Glaciers Close to Anchorage

How to See the Best of Alaska's Nature, Mountains and Glaciers Close to Anchorage
    By Robin Irving

Looking for just one more adventure to round out your Alaska Vacation? Prince William Sound is a great addition to an Alaska vacation package that will likely be the highlight of your Alaska Vacation. Incredible marine life, stunning mountain vistas, glaciers and three port cities that offer an array of visitor services, make this an attractive add on. And the Alaska Marine Highway has new and improved ferry service to and from the port cities of Whittier, Cordova and Valdez so trip planning just became easier, faster and more affordable.

Alaska is so large and so diverse that it is often difficult to see it all in one trip. But a trip through Prince William Sound, with a stop-over in each of the three communities will allow you to experience much of what makes Alaska special. And with the Alaska Marine Highway it's possible to make a loop so as not to repeat any part of your trip, always seeing something new and different.

In less than an hour, you can drive south from Anchorage to the port of Whittier. Whittier, an eclectic relic of a WWII army base is the gateway city of western Prince William Sound. Numerous charter operators large and small and expedition companies leading trips into the Sound can be found in Whittier. Small shops line the harbor offering food and gifts for visitors.

Alaska Marine Highway offers 30% off New High Speed Ferry

There is also a terminal office for the state's Marine Highway system in Whittier. With its new high speed ferry, the M/V Chenega it is now possible to take a half day cruise across the Sound from Whittier to Cordova. This is called the Marine Highway because you can take your car (or your rental car) on board (highly recommended). And during the summer of 2006, the state is offering some great specials with 30% off all sailings to and from the port of Cordova. The Chenega is a brand new ship offering full amenities. Once on board you'll feel like you are on a luxury cruise ship with beautiful local art hanging on the walls and its tasteful nautical dcor.

The state ferry also has National Forest Interpreters on board to provide a wealth of information on the marine and terrestrial environments of Prince William Sound. Besides the fantastic scenery, you can often see humpback and killer or orca whales, sea lions, sea otters, seals and other marine mammals. Look for puffins, arctic terns and other marine birds as well. For ferry schedule, lodging nature and glacier observation options in the Prince Williams sound visit: www.alaskarafters.com.

    Alaska Adventure Travel

Cordova is a jumping off point for some incredible adventure. You will definitely want to spend a couple of days here, before moving on to the next port city. A small fishing port Cordova is quaint, picturesque, and so Alaskan. There are National Forest Trails with giant rainforest trees, road accessible glaciers, sea otters and other marine life. It is a friendly town too. There are outfitters like the experts at Alaska River Expeditions offering everything from river rafting and sea kayaking to glacier trekking, ice climbing and mountain biking.

Choices for lodging vary from a standard hotel or motel with ocean views, to those with great Alaskan appeal. An old cannery is the site for a new adventure lodge; there are nautical inns and wonderful B&B's. Although there are no 5 star luxury resorts, most lodging choices offer great hospitality and all amenities as well as charm not found in large hotels. There are also several great restaurants offering local cuisine including the famed Copper River Salmon, Mexican, Italian, and Chinese entrees.

Cordova, Alaska - the Little Switzerland of Alaska

From Cordova, you can board the Marine Highway once again for the Port of Valdez. This is the terminal city for the Alaska Pipeline. You can see tankers loading and view the pipeline. It has cruise ships that dock so there are several shops that cater to visitors. Valdez is often referred to as little Switzerland because of the tall mountains surrounding the city.

You can complete your loop by driving north on the Richardson Highway. Waterfalls, glaciers and tall mountains surround you on your drive north through Thompson Pass. As you drive over the mountains to the other side, you will leave the coastal influence and enter another world. The evergreen forests give way to mixed deciduous forests with more birches and aspens, just two hours north of Valdez. The next bigger community north of Valdez is Glennallen. Here you will turn west onto the Glenn Highway. This winding highway takes you through the northern edge of the Chugach Mountains, eventually giving way to the farmland of the Mat-Su Valley. Picturesque farms dot the countryside before entering the more urban areas. Then its south onto the Parks Highway back to Anchorage, completing a great 3-7 day add-on loop for your Alaska vacation.

    Princess Cruise Alaska

    Princess Cruise Alaska
    By Marleny Anicama

Consistency is Princesss strength. With new, large premium ships joining its fleet, the companys major challenge now has been to maintain the service standards that passengers have come to expect, an effort in which it has generally succeeded.

If you were to put Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, and Holland America in a big bowl and mix them all together, youd come up with Princess Cruises megas. The Coral, Island, Diamond, and Sapphire Princesses, its latest creations, are less glitzy and frenzied than the ships of, say, Carnival and Royal Caribbean; not quite as cutting-edge as Celebritys Infinity and Summit; and more exciting, youthful, and entertaining than Holland Americas near megas.

The Princess fleet appeals to a wider cross section of cruisers by offering loads of choices and activities, plus touches of big ship glamour, along with plenty of the private balconies, quiet nooks, and calm spaces that characterize smaller, more intimate size vessels.

    Pros

    -Good service.
-The warm-hearted Italian, British, and Filipino service crew do a great job.
-Crew makes passengers feel welcome without being overly familiar.
-Private verandas. Virtually all of the lines Alaska ships have scads and scads of verandas, some of them in as many as 75% of the cabins.

    Cons

    - Average food. The ships cuisine is perfectly fine if youre not a gourmet, but if you are, youll find its pretty banquet hall is not as good as, say, Crystals or Celebritys.

Princess offers an array of land packages this year that can be used in more than 50 different cruise tour itineraries in Alaska in conjunction with its Gulf of Alaska and Inside Passage voyages (not to mention another dozen or so options in the Canadian Rockies). Virtually every part of the state is covered, from the Kenai Peninsula to the Interior to the Far North. The land portions come in 4- to 7-night segments, all combinable with a 7-night cruise.

    Alaska by Rail

    Alaska by Rail
    By Michael Russell

One of the best ways to see the sights of Alaska is through a railroad tour! The Alaska Railroad is a railway that runs between Anchorage and Whittier and also from Anchorage to Fairbanks. On the southern Whittier route, the train also stops at Seward and on the northern route, it stops at Denali and Talkeetna. These tracks cover some of the most beautiful Alaskan countryside and the Alaska Railroad operates several scenic tours for tourists.

Taking an Alaska Railroad tour is one of the best ways to view some of the more remote locations in Alaska's vast countryside. You will not have to worry about where you will stay each night, because the tours include your hotel accommodations at luxury hotels. You will stop periodically along the route to get out and enjoy some of the scenery, as well as mingle with native Alaskans. When you park yourself in the observation car, you will be gazing on some of the most beautiful views in the northern hemisphere.

One of the most popular Alaskan train tours is offered by the Alaska Railroad and is called Alaska by Rail. This tour is designed for the railway enthusiast and takes riders through some of the local culture. You will explore the Kenai Fjords National Park, as well as the shoreline of Kenai. The train will take you into some of the interior areas of the state and you will revel in the wildlife of Denali National Park. One of the stops even allows travelers to ride a sternwheeler down the Fairbanks River! This is a nine-day tour, with eight nights in luxury hotels. It begins and ends in Anchorage.

For those interested in a natural experience, the Visit Denali Tour offered by the Alaska Railroad takes guests on a three-day trip through the massive national park. This is a great way to experience the mountains that Alaska is so famous for. Do not be surprised if you see a herd of caribou on this trip!

For the ultimate rail experience in Alaska, consider the Alaskan Odyssey trip. This is an eleven-day tour of the entire state, starting at the Pacific and ending at the Arctic. It takes visitors to all of the most famous Alaskan destinations and includes transportation by train, plain and bus. You will experience the midnight sun over the Arctic Ocean, the thrill of the Arctic National Park and the opportunity to see some of Alaska's wildlife in Denali National Park. This tour also takes you through the vast tundra, an experience you are sure to never forget.

The White Pass and Yukon Railroad offers tourist trips through the Alaska into the Yukon of Canada. This railway is historic, as it was built around the turn of the century during the height of the Klondike Gold Rush. This trip takes you on cars that are recreations of the original cars through train stations that are also reminiscent of a time gone by. Like the other railway, you will enjoy the most stunning views on this trip and the cars have large windows for you to use to view the passing scenery. Each car is also equipped with outside viewing platforms that you can use to get a taste of fresh air.

Preparing for an Alaskan Canoe Trip

Preparing for an Alaskan Canoe Trip
    By Michael Russell

You will need to know exactly how to prepare before you get into your car and go canoeing. First, you must decide what type of canoe to buy from the sporting goods store. There are many kinds of canoes, however if you plan on canoeing in an area with moving water, you will need a rocker. Once you have found the canoe you like, closely examine the stem to the stern; there should be 2 inches or more here. If the canoe has no kneel, you will have no problem making tight turns or spinning around. Having a stable canoe is also important, so look for one that is 36 inches wide. Remember, canoeing in Alaska requires skill, so spend time on calm waters and practice, because canoeing is also dangerous for novices. If you want to bring kids, you can, but be careful and always make sure the canoe is stable. An easy way to level the canoe is to pack it with moose meat, however this method makes maneuvering tougher.

When you are packing, you will need the proper gear, so you have to make sure you are well prepared and that you securely attach the canoe to your car. Canoes are very tipsy, so you have to pack at the bottom and put your lighter things at the top. Make sure to install tie down points if your vehicle does not have them because you do not want anything flying off. If you pack an inflatable canoe, put a crushable item at the bottom to prevent the floor from damaging. A helpful item that you can also pack is a 5-gallon bucket with a lid because it has a few uses. Firstly, it can store your food during the trip until you are back on land. Secondly, once on land, it makes a handy camp seat if you do not have many chairs. Finally, when it is time for dinner, you can use it for a cutting board to prepare the fish you caught. One of the best places to go canoeing in Alaska if you are just beginning is Clearwater. You can camp out near Jack Warren Rd and float to the lake; this area has great fish and nice scenery. Once you are done canoeing, you are going to need to an anchor; however, you do not have to buy one. The easiest way to make one is to use a coffee can filled with concrete that is secured to an eyebolt.

During your trip, you are going to encounter powerboats passing you while you are on the lake. A powerboat generally produces a 5-inch wake after it passes you if it is cruising. A speeding powerboat, however, will sometimes cause you to be splashed depending on where you are on the lake. Willow creek is good area to go avoid this because it is narrow, but there will be other jet boats, airboats and props there all well. The best thing to do when you see a powerboat is move to the side. Doing this prevents you from seeing the other person's boat, but you will hear it once it is close enough. The most important thing to have is courtesy, if you get along with everyone you won't have any problems.

An Alaskan canoeing trip is great to relax, just make sure that you choose the right canoe, pack correctly and make room for other people in their powerboats.
